The short version
This website sets no cookies except one for your choice of language and transmits no data to third parties. It embeds no external fonts, maps or videos. Exactly one file is loaded from another machine: the script for our own audience measurement, which works without cookies and runs on a server of ours.
Opening the website (server log files)
When you open a page, the hosting provider automatically records data your browser transmits: the address requested, date and time, the amount of data transferred, a message about successful retrieval, browser type and version, operating system, referring address and IP address. These data are necessary for operation and security; the legal basis is Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR. They are not combined with other data. The logs are deleted after a short period.
Hosting: Mittwald CM Service GmbH & Co. KG, Königsberger Straße 4–6, 32339 Espelkamp, Germany. A data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is in place with the provider.
Cookie for the choice of language
When you open a language version, a cookie named quellschau_language stores your choice — its content is either de or en, nothing else. It serves solely to avoid redirecting you again on your next visit, contains no identifier and allows no recognition of you as a person. As it is strictly necessary for a service you have expressly requested, it requires no consent under § 25 (2) no. 2 TDDDG. Lifetime one year; you can delete it in your browser at any time.
Fonts
The fonts used (Inter, IBM Plex Mono) are hosted on this server. There is no connection to Google Fonts or any other font service, and your IP address is transmitted to no one for this purpose.
Audience measurement
To see which content is being read we use Umami, analytics software running on a server of our own at stats.netthinks.com. We operate that server ourselves; no third party is involved and no data leaves our hands.
Umami sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. Recorded are the page requested, the referring address, approximate origin at country level, and coarse information about browser, operating system and screen size. Your IP address is used to tell visits apart but is not stored. No cross-device profile is built, no recognition across websites takes place, and no analysis leads back to you as a person.
Because nothing is stored on or read from your terminal equipment, no consent under § 25 TDDDG is required. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a frugal analysis of usage under Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR; you may object to this processing under Art. 21 GDPR.
Newsletter (weekly digest)
You may subscribe to the weekly digest with your e-mail address. Delivery runs through Brevo GmbH, Köpenicker Straße 126, 10179 Berlin, Germany. Subscription uses the double opt-in procedure: after signing up you receive an e-mail with a confirmation link, and only then is the address added. Stored are the address and the time and IP address of the sign-up and the confirmation — the latter in order to be able to prove the subscription.
The legal basis is your consent under Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR. You may withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing carried out until then: every digest e-mail contains an unsubscribe link, and an informal message to us is equally sufficient. After unsubscribing, the address is deleted. A data processing agreement is in place with Brevo; processing takes place within the EU.
Your address is used solely for the digest and is neither analysed for other purposes nor passed on.
Machine-written summaries
The short summaries beneath the headlines are produced by language models operated by OpenAI and Anthropic. Only publicly published headlines and teasers from the respective source are transmitted for this. No data about visitors to this website is transmitted — the summaries are written in the background at a different time and have nothing to do with your visit.
Links to other websites
This site consists largely of references to other websites. As soon as you follow a link, the privacy policy of that website applies; we have no influence over its processing. The links are only called up when you click them — merely displaying the overview establishes no connection to the linked sites.
Encryption
This website is delivered exclusively over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
Your rights
You have the right to information about the data stored about you (Art. 15 GDPR), to rectification (Art. 16), to erasure (Art. 17), to restriction of processing (Art. 18), to data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on a legitimate interest (Art. 21). Any consent given may be withdrawn at any time with effect for the future.
An informal message to the address above is sufficient. Independently of this, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority; the one responsible for us is: Der Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit Baden-Württemberg, Lautenschlagerstraße 20, 70173 Stuttgart, Germany.
No obligation to provide data
You do not have to provide any personal data in order to use this website. Without an e-mail address only the digest is unavailable; all content on the website is open regardless.
